Sometimes you have to wonder who would buy a game based on the box that it
is in or on some well-known brand name. Slap WWF Wrestlemania on a game
and you can pretty much guarantee that it will be a big success for the
publisher, no matter what the quality of the game is. Ocean certainly
found that out when they released two sub-standard WWF games. The idea is
the same for film licences. It seems that most people will decide to buy a
game if it is based on a well-known film, than, for example, reading
carefully considered reviews or trying a demo.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is one of two games based on the excellent
film, Terminator 2 (the other being Terminator 2: The Arcade Game, an
Operation Wolf-style shoot-'em-up). It is standard film licence material -
that is a series of sub-games, based on certain scenes of the film. Quite
why the software team decided to split the effort across sub-games, rather
than concentrating on one whole game is beyond me. Maybe it is because it
was the normal thing to do.

Whatever the reasons behind the game are, we are left with a pretty
mediocre game. The first beat-'em-up section is frankly abysmal and is a
battle between the old and the new Terminator in a corridor. Instead of
feeling like the powerful battle that it should, you seem to poke your
opponent, and cause little damage. You can also fire a weapon at the other
Terminator.

After the slow-motion, beat'-em-up 'action' of the first level, this game
improves slightly with a racing section. You race a moped and see the
level from the top-down, trying to outrun the Terminator's truck and avoid
obstacles. After this level, it's back to the dross, with a tedious moving
pieces, puzzle section.

The authors have succeeded in one thing and that is making a game just
like the cybernetic Terminator - without life or soul.
